Critical evaluation organization's Resources and Capabilities of Coursework - 1

Critical evaluation organization's Resources and Capabilities of Starbucks in China. (internal environment) - Coursework Example In the case of Starbucks an effective Resources strategy should focus on the employment of unique resources so that a competitive advantage is acquired towards the firm’s major competitors. The potentials of Starbucks to develop such advantage is analyzed below by referring to the firm’s performance in regard to each of the elements of the Resource-based theory. 1.1 Tangible Resources The tangible resources of organizations are assets that have a physical existence; the buildings in which business operations are developed and the cash available to the business are assets of this kind (Sehgal 2010). In China, as in all countries worldwide, Starbucks is characterized by specific features as of the style/ decoration of its stores and the dinnerware sets/ cups used for serving the customers (Starbucks Coffee International 2013). However, these features are not unique since they can be identified, with differentiations, in other brands operating in the same sector. According to Wang (2012) the interior of Starbuck’s stores across China is unique not only in regard to decoration but also as of the chairs available to customers and the style of music chosen; in this context, it is noted that the stores of Starbucks in China offer to the business a unique competence towards the competitors (Wang 2012). 1.2 Intangible Resources The intangible resources of a business do not have a physical existence; intellectual property rights that the business have in regard to its products and the brands that the business owns are common examples of intangible resources (Sehgal 2010). For achieving a high competitiveness through its intangible resources, a firm needs to periodically update those resources, according to the market trends. The example of Toyota that developed Lexus as a separate brand so that it is able to increase its competitiveness in the luxury cars sector is important for understanding such practice (Sehgal 2010, p.44). In the above case, Toyo ta would not be able to enter this sector without the employment of a unique resource, such as the new brand (Sehgal 2010, p.44). 1.3 Human Resources Human resources can also lead to competitive advantage if they are unique (Rao and Sivaramakrishna 2009). The uniqueness of these resources would be related to a variety of issues, such as the quality of training, the hiring/ selection process or the performance appraisal (Rao and Sivaramakrishna 2009). In Starbucks employees are given the training that it is commonly available to the sector’s employees; also, no unique feature seems to exist in regard to the firm’s selection/ hiring process or the skills/ competencies of employees (Starbucks Coffee International 2013) 2.0 Starbucks’s Capabilities strategy in term of Value chain At the next level, the Capabilities strategy of Starbucks should be also reviewed. Porter’s Value Chain model could be used for evaluating the specific strategy of Starbucks. Accordi ng to Porter (2008) the activities of each organization contribute, more or less, to the development of products/ services that ‘are valuable to their buyers’ (Porter 2008, p.38). These activities can be categorized into ‘

Quiestion 1 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Quiestion 1 - Essay Example I was not really thinking of how my audience would feel as they read through my essay. Maybe, at some point in my essay, I was subconsciously trying to persuade my readers into believing that I made the right decision to join the Navy. However, that was not intentional on my part. I was simply stating facts in my life and I was not really aware as to how this would impact on my audience. To my knowledge, my writing style was not in any manner influenced by my audience. I wrote the essay as if I was just writing in my diary. I did not have any style of writing in mind. All I wanted to do was to be able to share my experience. It did not matter if my audience would judge me for the decisions that I made during the span of my career. I did not care even if I would be judged rightly or wrongly for the career path that I took. I wrote my experience as honestly as I can. All I wanted was to stick to the facts, unmask my true feelings and be credible, even if my audience was not interested. Project 3 My audience is my primary consideration while I was writing this essay on the need to abolish capital punishment. I wanted to get their 100% attention because I wanted to drive a point to them. At any one point of my essay, I wanted to be convincing enough so that my audience will believe the idea I was trying to espouse. On the first part of my essay, I presented to my audience that capital punishment is against the United States constitution. I also explained how the punishment is executed. I explained how lethal injection affects the person being executed. It is my purpose to present facts first to my audience so that they may have some basis for whatever decision they will come up with regards to the legality, as well as the morality of the death penalty. While writing my essay, I put in mind that my audience could be divided into three categories. First are the advocates of death penalty. Second, are the people who like me, are against capital punishment. The third c ategory is the undecided. These are the people who are still trying to weigh things and looking at the advantages and disadvantages of death penalty. I think that my essay is more directed to those belonging to the third category, the undecided. They are the people who need a lot of convincing. They are the reason why I chose the writing style that I resorted to which is the appeal to the emotions. Most of the words that I used are very emphatic and aims to touch their hearts. At the same time, I also appealed to their intellectual capacities by citing various facts and findings regarding the disadvantages of death penalty. I had to present some information on the flaws of the United States’ justice system and the abolition of capital punishment on most developed countries. I wanted to convince my audience that death penalty is inhuman, if not barbaric. With regards to my writing style, I tried to be very persuasive in order to put my audience into action against death penalt y. I often used thought- provoking questions and presented it to my audience to get them into thinking seriously on the negative effects of death penalty and why it should be abolished. I tried my best to be very purposeful in the sentences that I used. In conclusion, I think that if I chose a scholarly writing style, I would not be as effective in persuading my audience to abhor and act against the death penalty. Since my goal is not only to inform but to persuade my audience, the appeal to

Persuasive Forms of Leadership Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Persuasive Forms of Leadership Paper - Essay Example Persuasive form of leadership can be used in different methods, that is, through â€Å"persuasive leadership and the power to influence† (Bethune, 2010, p.2). It is important that public leaders should be capable of reassuring the supporters of their plans and motives as well as be able to demonstrate concern in the public affairs or issues that affect the people. Leadership is a procedure, which facilitates a manager to direct, lead and influence the work as well as behavior of the concerned people towards achievement of particular goals under the required circumstances. It is the aptitude of the manager to encourage and boost the level of confidence of his subordinates as well as motivate them to do their best in order to fulfill the tasks at hand. Leadership research has integrated various qualities that show the significant differences between leaders and non-leaders as well as the impact it has on the supporters. It is a process that calls for publicly acceptable behavior containing personality traits that will help motivate individuals to reach an objective or goal. A lot of studies have shown that a person’s characteristics along with his or her abilities and skills can forecast leader effectiveness. For example, President Obama did this by executing the healthcare reform. He captured the attention of the US citizens by first stating that insurance firms are too powerful then he suggested a reform for this case. Next, the President foresaw the final result and then executed the planned reform or solution. In this particular case, the members or supporters of the President are affected by the chances of the healthcare reform. Thus, this paper talks about the different forms of persuasive leadership, the ways a leader may be persuasive and how he or she may facilitate change, as well as the two ways in which a leader is mainly persuasive and effective. Persuasive Forms of Leadership: Trust is one of the most significant elements in public lea dership, especially when there arises a need for change. The followers or supporters of the leader need to be assured that the leader can deliver on his or her promises. If a supporter distrusts or doubts a leader then he may spread his doubts among others and soon the leader loses his power, thus leading to overall problems for the whole respective group. Trust is the first step in building relationships and when public leaders gain trust of the people they both gain mutual satisfaction. When trust is established, a leader can convince the followers that the job will get done as well as influence the opposing parties to believe in them. This indeed determines how constituents respond to change, proposed change, or the outcome. â€Å"Leadership is the potential to influence behaviour of others. It is also defined as the capacity to influence a group towards the realization of a goal† (â€Å"Management Study Guide,† n.d.). Leaders are necessary to expand future visions as well as to inspire the managerial members to want to attain the respective visions. Various forms of persuasive leadership include credibility, shared ground, compelling position, rewards and incentives, and commitment. All of these persuasive forms of leadership affect how supporters react to the intentions leaders are trying to communicate to the public. Furthermore, these persuasive forms are characteristics of leadership which supporters can observe and then develop their own opinion on the legality of data received. â€Å"A leader is involved in shaping and moulding the behaviour of the group towards accomplishment of organizational goals† (â€Å"Management Study Guide,† n.d.). The two ways in which a leader may imbibe the most effective persuasion in the public is through credibility and shared ground. Credibility:

Race and Your Community Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Race and Your Community - Essay Example who has not had much engagement in the arena of race discourse and who have been spared the oppressions wrought upon racial minorities, it is all too easy for me to forget that there are looming issues that need to be resolved and ugly truths that have to be confronted. And while much has changed since the 1800’s, and new developments have been introduced that have sought to alleviate the racial divide not only in this State and in this country but in the world as well, it is incorrect to believe that the problem has been completely solved. We must be grateful that the world we have now is a better, more tolerant and more accepting world, but we must still try to think of steps to further reduce the racial divide. I look around me and I see that members of my community look like me. White Americans easily form 70% of my community, though there are those of African American, Asian and Latin American descent around me. Caucasians look alike for obvious reasons – skin color, eye color and hair color reveal a common racial blueprint. Even the most idle observer would perhaps be able to distinguish among the races because of these distinctions. It is also worthy to note that the racial divide seems to extend to choice in fashion, music, and the like. African-Americans tend to dress alike, for instance, and have the same tastes in music. For example, Tennessee boasts of a long tradition of gospel music, commonly associated with African Americans. Jazz music is also another Tennessee tradition. The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920’s – the period wherein blacks made their mark in the artistic scene – saw black musicals and jazz music emerging in the mainstream scene. Indeed, the differences in the musical tastes run deep and add a colorful flavor to the Tennessee cultural collage. Of course, there are many songs of recent vintage that cut across race, particularly among the younger generation. Our political office is comprised of African-Americans and Caucasians

Fast Food and Free Time Essay MIt is common for university students to have a semester break in between each semester in a year. It usually lasts for about 3 to 4 months. Consequently, students will feel bored during the semester break because they have nothing to do. In my opinion, university students nowadays do spend their free time wisely because they will find some job to fulfil their semester break before starting their studies, doing a short semester and making small business to earn money for their expenses. Firstly, university students nowadays do spend their free time wisely because during semester break, they will find a job to fulfil their semester break before resuming their studies. Usually, their popular choice would be part time job in fast food outlets such as KFC, McDonald’s and Pizza Hut. By working, they learn the hardships of earning money and at the same time they are doing something beneficial. Besides, they can also use their salary to pay the fees for their next semester and thus they can reduce their parents’ burden. Secondly, university students nowadays do spend their free time wisely because some of students doing short semester for spend their free time in semester break especially for those repeaters, they can finish the repeat subject earlier and have no burden to take the subject again for the next semester. Beside that, repeater students will not taking a long time to finishing their studies and grading earlier. Lastly, university students nowadays do spend their free time wisely because most of them do a small business when semester break. For example they open a stall burger.
